A grain of truth – I live here I’ve seen the coast guard and BP workers remove people from the beaches!

They didn’t outsmart anybody. A quick google search for quote “Who is stopping footage of the oil spill” turns up hundreds of different websites with different pictures of the oil spill, most of them aerial photos.
There is however a grain of truth in what you’ve said. Small portions of the area have been withheld, though that was only at the start of the disaster. This wasn’t done for any political reason though, but out of concern for the families of those killed in the original oil rig explosion. Keep in mind that thing didn’t sink straight to the bottom, as some have been led to believe, but instead it listed heavily and burned for some time before finally breaking apart. It took, by all accounts, several DAYS to finally sink, and in doing so took a number of men to the bottom with it. Since the site of the accident was also a recovery area for bodies that might float to the surface, BP wisely with held those photos, for fear of the families seeing bodies floating on the surface of the water, or ships in the body recovery phase.
After they were certain they found all they could, then the airspace was restricted only to a certain height. Again this wasn’t political, but for safety reasons. BP didn’t want random news choppers bumping into each other (as has happened in the past) or bumping into the helicopters used by BP itself. Since then, the restriction on flight has been curtailed, with news agencies making several flights a day over the spill.
